3] The FX Prefix

The registration number of each Am-Pug tells you exactly what blend of Boston Terrier and Pug is in that animal.

FX...is a first generation cross.  One parent is Pug and the other is Boston.  Most puppies are brindle/reverse brindle with very little white.  Their tails are long but usually kinked - like a long screw tail.  This is the main reason that the club recommends that the tails be docked.

FX2...is the result of a cross between an FX and a Pug.  These puppies tend to be brindled, have smaller white markings, and be chunkier in build than an FX.  The tails are long with occasional small kinks.

FX3...is the result between and FX and a Boston.  These pups tend to have more white, more erect ears, and are leaner in build than an FX.  The tails are usually short or  very kinked - sometimes a full screw tail.  The brindling tends to be fainter and not as well defined, even if both parents are brindle.

FX4...is the result of mating two FXes [a full second generation cross].  The coloring can be anything - there are no restrictions.  In build they are in the middle where they are supposed to be.

The remaining 'FX' numbers represent successive crosses - see chart.  The ideal Am-Pug tends to be pretty close to 1/2 and 1/2.  Another good cross is 3/8 and 5/8 either way.  Efforts should be made to keep the blending as close to half and half as possible - this will help stabilize the breed type.

4] The Category Code

The Category Code is a rather long grouping of letters and numbers that tells the color and markings of the animal it was issued to.  It is time consuming and a little confusing to fill out the chart for each puppy, but it gives a more positive way of identifying each animal.  It helps verify that the papers match the animal.
The prefix tells the status of the animal.
AP = Am-Pug.  FB = Foundation Boston = NAPC registered Boston Terrier.  FP = Foundation Pug = NAPC registered Pug.
The numbers in the code are taken directly from the 'Application to Register' chart:

A "Y" or an "N" is used for 'Blue in Eyes' to make the code easier to read.  A slash[/] is used after the white marking, again to make it easier to read.  After the leg markings if the dog is a Pug or a Boston there in another "Y" or"N" indicating registration with another club.  If it is a "Y" it also indicates that a copy of the other registration is on file with the NAPC.
Filling out the application completely not only assures the buyer that the papers match the dog, it helps the club do research on just what color/marking combinations are being produced by which crosses.
